20 Feb Today’s benefits of Cloud Desktop Virtualization
How about using Remote Desktop Services (RDS) and Microsoft Azure virtual machines to create hosted Windows desktop and application services, which we call “Desktop Hosting”? This architecture references to create highly secure, scalable and reliable desktop hosting solutions for small- and medium-sized organizations. This combined with all the Modern Datacenter options in Azure makes this solution the most flexible in the market. Here is ‘why’ and ‘how’. Oh, and please click on the images for more in depth information.
The flexibility of Cloud Remote Desktop Services allows you to get the best of both worlds:
• The simplicity and pay-as-you-go methods associated with the cloud
• The familiarity and hassle-free way of leveraging heavy resources that already exist on-premises
Scalable in the cloud
This solution is accessible for both cloud and traditional on-site based users. Use Azure AD or on-premises AD to build the perfect Hybrid Cloud Solution. Using all the best technology with the Cloud OS Windows Server 2016 combined with Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) enables Scale-out File Server (SOFS) in Azure VMs.
With a Scale-out File Server in an Availability set, RDS gets the best option for hosting the User Profile Disks. This load is fully supported in Azure combined with a S2D cluster.
Storage Spaces Direct uses industry-standard servers with local-attached drives to create highly available, highly scalable software-defined storage at a fraction of the cost of traditional Storage Area Network (SAN) or Network Attached Storage (NAS) arrays. Due to converged or hyper-converged architecture it dramatically simplifies procurement and deployment. On the other hand features like caching, storage tiers, and erasure coding and the latest hardware innovation, deliver unrivaled efficiency and performance.
Based on this flexible configuration you can lose two servers or more than two disks without data loss or downtime.
Looking at this solution in Azure it is applicable for much more than just running RDS workloads alone.
Flexibility at ease
If we combine all the new features of RDS and Windows Server 2016, we get the best solution for virtualized hosted desktops: a connected desktop from any place, any time and any device with the power of Azure. Because all workloads in Azure are payed per use, it is easy to scale down in the time you don’t need (some of) the workloads. But when there is a need to scale up or you need a VM for heavy video usage, you can easily adjust the current VM or request a new VM.
Building on Azure you will get the flexibility for the time you need the workloads. With custom Azure Automation scripts, you can scale the RDS load when needed. Either for a ‘burst’ situation, ‘on-off’ or any other scenario.
At Caase.com we have built a custom RDS automation which brings the cloud principles actually to work.
Based on the RDS workloads and user demands, RDS hosts are scaled up and down and are fully automated reacting to feature loads.
In perspective to management the IT Admin can manage the RDS workload as if it runs on-premises. Whether you build, rebuild, extend, expand the workload or build a copy of the production workload as a test site, all is possible with the Azure Workload.
Get in control with Operations Management Suite
When using advanced automation, we are not only reducing cost for the customer, we also get the maximum uptime of the Azure VM’s. Combining this solution with Microsoft Operations Management Suite (MSOMS) shows to be very valuable. Get the insights and overview of the virtual RDS solution will end up in true control of the environment.
With OMS Service map, you can check on Load, Performance, Changes, Alerts, Updates and much more. Scaling servers and make a graph on the current available machines you will get more management insights based on all the logging. With that, you will be able to make data-based management decisions on your cloud RDS solution in Microsoft Azure.
OMS will help you to prevent, detect and respond to threats much quicker due to increased visibility. Take control of cloud security by defining policies that recommend and monitor security configurations. Leverage Microsoft security data and analysis to perform more intelligent and effective threat detection.
Next generation RDS
When you want to provide a hosted desktop to your employees, just think twice whether you want to build your RDS solution a 100% on-premises. By using the flexibility and scalability of Azure you will get a more flexible and cost effective solution. Maybe even better, your hosted desktop users can access their important applications and data from any device, from any place at any given time.
